Parrot Bluetooth Handsfree Motorcycle Helment Kit SK4000 (HELMET NOT INCLUDED) Review

Parrot Bluetooth Handsfree Motorcycle Helment Kit SK4000 (HELMET NOT INCLUDED)
Average Reviews:

I love this headset. I've had my Parrot SK4000 headset for about 6 months and in that time have put well over 100 hours on it. I'm a technically literate person but I don't think that this device is complicated at all, I suspect that anyone that can use a smart phone, can use this headset. I started out with a Windows Mobile phone and changed to Android after about a month of owning this. I ride a 2010 BMW F800GS with a Shoei RF1100 helmet. It's a moderately quiet bike and helmet.
On the plus side, the headset is very simple to set up and use. I didn't bother with the manual beyond the initial pairing of my phone to the headset. Windows Mobile was fantastic, after less than a minute I was voice dialing my address book and playing music at will. My main use of this is to listen to music on rides, and be able to take or make a call while on the road. I've had 30 minute conversations with my mom while traveling at 80 mph (I mean 70mph) down the interstate. She had no idea she was even talking to me on my bike. I could hear her clearly even though she was also on her cell phone in Alaska while I was in Tennessee. The sound is loud and clear with very little distortion for both voice and music calls. Battery life is very good, just did a 6 hour ride this weekend with no issues. It's gone dead on me before but it does play music for hours and hours, as long as you remember to plug it in every time it goes dead. And I've even plugged it into the bike with a the charger cable hanging from my helmet a few times. So it does play and charge at the same time, a big plus! Scanning for radio stations isn't the greatest and the radio reception is limited to only strongest stations. But it does work and is a great option when I just want to listen to something other than the music on my phone.
Now for the bad...
Just like any headset that you have to install yourself, it takes a lot of tweaking to get it right. I found that by using wide sticky Velcro (Walmart $5.97 a roll) I could stick the backs of a positive and negative strips together and cut out little dics that could be put on the speakers to bring the speakers themselves closer to my ears. The issue was not the headset itself but the distance the speakers were from my ears. The Velcro solved that. The next issue I had was the attachment to the helmet, it took a lot of adjustment and tweaks to get it right and I'm still not happy. The pin fell out at some point but was easy enough to replace. Occasionally I do have an issue with it not streaming, but that seems to be an Android issue, not a headset issue.
On that note, if you have Windows Mobile, Bluetooth is a seamless and fantastic experience. This is one of the very few places Microsoft is leaps and bounds ahead of the competition. I have used a Blackberry, Iphone and Android on this headset. My work blackberry is pretty good, my Android isn't bad now that they've done the firmware update to 2.1. But before it would only connect a call for a few seconds before randomly disconnecting, that issue has since vanished. And the Iphone was fine... if you can get it to connect, it works pretty good though I had several issues taking calls while listening to GPS directions and music and having it just disconnect altogether. The big plus to this headset is the built in phonebook with voice dialing. You can actually dial by voice even if you phone doesn't support it. A huge when you're lost or running late. I didn't even realize how much I loved the handlebar remote until I tested other sets without it.
All in all I love this and would purchase it again. Most of the issues I've had were more with the phones themselves, everyone seems to have their own idea of how Bluetooth should work. I really wish I could get alerts and voice announcements to come across Bluetooth on my Android like it did on Windows Mobile.
Finally, I wish that the headset had an intercom. I was riding solo when I purchased this but now that I ride with my girlfriend a lot, I really need an intercom. Hand signals are just not cutting it. Unfortunately, after weeks of research I still can't find a headset with all the features of the SK4000 plus an intercom.
If you ride alone, with a closed faced helmet and you have a smartphone... get this. I can't say enough about being able to stream crystal clear music into my head while having GPS instructions pause your music and still being able to take a call. I'll just live with hand signals in lieu of an intercom system, for now.

Sony MEXBT3700U CD Receiver Bluetooth Hands-Free with Integrated Microphone (Black) Review

Sony MEXBT3700U CD Receiver Bluetooth Hands-Free with Integrated Microphone (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this head unit because I got an iphone 3GS (previous iphone models do not have Bluetooth audio streaming (A2DP)) and wanted something that would give me as many options of integrating it with the car stereo as possible without spending a ton of money. I also didn't want to have to pay extra for the bluetooth attachments that you have to add on to the bluetooth ready head units.
-BLUETOOTH AUDIO STREAMING
The audio bluetooth streaming is great sound quality is very good (I am not a picky audiophile so can't say if sensitive ears would notice anything wrong with the quality), I actually listen to local radio stations through their internet streams through the iphone then bluetoothed to the car stereo because its better sound quality then what I get out of the tuner (any tuner not just this one, I live in a bad radio reception area between 2 markets). The stereo usually picks up my phone (for both phone and audio) within 30 seconds of turning on the car. I have had to reset the bluetooth (takes about 20 seconds, push one button twice) every few weeks because it will start to get skippy but it is a pretty minor inconvenience. Listening to Pandora through the Iphone to the car stereo is awesome, and has greatly improved my commute.

-Bluetooth Phone connection
Connects within 30 seconds of starting the car. Sound quality is good. And the microphone that is built in actually works well, this shocked me I was sure I would have to either yell or buy an external mic but the one that comes in the head unit picks up my voice fine I have not had a complaint about people on the other end of the call not being able to hear me. Another good thing about the mic being built in is that it saved me $60 on the installation that they would have charged me to install an external mic. The transition between phone call and what was playing before the call is automatic and fluid.
-USB input
I have not gotten a chance to use this because the bluetooth has worked well. It would be nice if it had a USB on the back of the unit in addition to the one on the front so that you could run a wire hidden behind the console plastic and have it connect where ever you wanted it to without it cluttering up the car (that is the main reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars).Overall I love this unit because it was fairly cheap and it does exactly what I wanted it to do in respect to integrating with my Iphone.

Motorola H17txt Bluetooth Headset (Graphite Gray) Review

Motorola H17txt Bluetooth Headset (Graphite Gray)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
EDIT ************ The H17 gets a FIVE STAR rating, but the Motospeak app gets a four star at the moment (until a newer version fixes a few problems)***************
This headset does a lot, plus a lot more. Let's start off with the basics before jumping into the Motospeak App.
The H17txt is a lightweight, attractive, and comfortable Bluetooth headset. Phone calls come through clearly, with no reported dropped connections while using it.
The advertised "mini noise cancellation" works, but not like the many noise cancelling headphones. It certainly helps tremendously when trying to hear a phone call where the recipient's reception is bad on top of you being in bad weather, or...in general. Feels like you are pressing the headset against your ear, except you do not have to do that because of the "background reduction" feature.
Battery life is said to be 5 hours talk time and 6 days standby, but what is useful on this particular headset is that if you want to turn it off, you retract the boom. This helps when you are in places where you know that you will not be using it for a longer period of time, but still want it on your ear.
In order to fit it to your ear, it comes with different size ear-gels, to conform to different shapes but also has a hearing-aid like band that you can loop around your ear. I found this to not work so well as it did not exactly fit as neatly and tightly as with the ear-gels.
There are, of course, various buttons on the unit itself such as volume and push to talk/dial. When you press the dial button when there are no calls coming in, you have the option to make this a voice dial command. Meaning that you can say "call or dial ". I am sure you have used this feature in other devices such your cell phone or GPS, but it works nicely, and I found it to follow my commands better than any I have used thus far.
This unit will also tell you when your battery is low and what the battery level is (by pressing the volume up and down simultaneously). Moreover, when you connect this to your phone the voice, I call her Grace (personification is fun with electronics), will guide you through the process of linking your phone to the device, while also letting you know when it connects and disconnects.
Now on to the fun stuff: MotoSpeak.
We know that this headset takes calls, but it also reads back texts and e-mails. For this to work you will have to download an app called "Motospeak" which has a free and a premium version. Personally, I loaded this on my Blackberry and this review will reflect that. First off, the difference between the free/premium are in the preferences. For example on the premium you can change the type of voice speaking back to you i.e. man instead of a woman. You can also adjust the e-mail settings on premium, whereas on the free version you cannot.
The Motospeak function is great when it is in use. You can adjust the settings so that it will only read what you want it to read, but by default it will say something along the lines of: "Text from

Once paired, all I have to do is get in the car and turn it on. I have a Blackjack / Samsung SGH-i607.
The volume and clarity is great and almost on par with the built in speakerphone in our 07 Prius
The battery seems to last FOREVER. I have not charged it since buying it months ago, and have made 10-15 calls. The auto off works great, but be sure you take your phone far enough to unpair; the range is at least 100ft.

I buy tons of gadgets and with the exception of a few products, it seems like most fall short of perfect. Not so here. Instead of little disappointments, I go a lot of little surprises that added up to a great experience from unboxing to actual use.
First off, I could actually open the package without getting scissors. When I looked inside, they gave me a bonus "in-car vent mounted cell phone holder". It's actually not cheesy and is something that I will use to park my phone while I make calls.
They also give you a AC and Car charger. Lots of companies like apple make you get this separately so I was happy that it was included.
OK, so all this is great, but how well does it work? I followed the easy directions to pair it with my Treo 680 and 30 seconds later I was making calls. I rang my wife in the car with the AC blasting and the window rolled halfway down to test it. We could hear each other no problem. I asked her if I sounded OK and she had no complaints.
I LOVE how releasing the mic turns the unit on. Brilliant. My only complaint is that the magnet that holds the unit to the visor clip is not as strong as I would like. You have to be a little careful when you press the mic back in or else it will start to rotate off the clip. I haven't been using this too long so we'll see how much of an issue this is.

I went through a little brain damage getting this thing to pair up with my phone... but that's probably because I didn't take the manual literally when it advised to hold the answer button down for a full 5 seconds. :) I kept seeing the blue light flash and would release the button, not realizing I needed to hold it down until I saw the alternating blue/red lights flashing, indicating it was in pairing mode.
Now that I have it paired, I think I'm in love. Fellow drivers in my city can now breathe a sigh of relief that I am hands-free in the car.

Sony ICD-B200 Digital Voice Recorder (Silver) Review

Sony ICD-B200 Digital Voice Recorder (Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The voice recorder works well. The only fault that I have with it is the batteries only seem to last about 2 weeks. The is no off button, so the display is always on. I am assuming that this is what is putting a drain on the batteries. Rechargables are really a must. My fiance uses this twice a week for college classes. It does record well, playback isn't great through the built in tiny speaker, but if you play it through external speakers, it sounds alot better. Also as stated by other people, it does not vome with an external mic.
Not a bad product for the money.

I've had this for about 3 weeks. It works great with my iPod Touch v4, sounds great, and the BT telephone link works well. Things I DON'T like about it though, are: the control buttons on the right are too small, labels too small, and the labels don't illuminate at night so you don't know what the heck they do - just numbers 1-6. My biggest negative is that the backlighiting is NOT ADJUSTABLE - Pioneer customer service just told me "that is not a feature on that unit". So, the display and some of the buttons are so bright at night that they are distracting, and it doesn't dim along with the dash lights - so I'm sending the unit back. Too bad Pioneer - what were you thinking???

The video is an audio comparision between the microphone part of the Chat 50 and the microphone that's built into my Asus netbook.
From a usability standpoint this thing couldn't have been easier to use. With both Windows XP and Windows 7 it was plug and immediately play.
BTW, I feel that honest, effective reviews, accompanied by detailed videos, can take the place of first-hand experiences that are often lacking in online shopping. I've always appreciated the help I've received from other reviewers and try to return the favor as best as I can. I hope you found this review helpful and the video at least entertaining. The product worked as advertised. I was able to set it up in seconds for the blue tooth option. since I don't use the FM radio in my van I did not set up the FM transmitter. I can hear other people just fine and I have not heard anyone say they can't hear me or ask me to repeat myself. Only 1 little glitch after a month of using it. It did disconnect and reconnect once but I think i passed someone else using the same frequency which caused it. The price here was 20% cheaper that Best Buy and it was delivered free. I would recommend this product to all of my friends.

TomTom VIA 1535T 5-Inch Portable Bluetooth GPS Navigator with Lifetime Traffic Review

TomTom VIA 1535T 5-Inch Portable Bluetooth GPS Navigator with Lifetime Traffic
Average Reviews:

Update on 4/20/11:
I continued to have significant issues with the TomTom device, and with absolutely no help from TomTom, Amazon allowed me to exchange the product (which was very easy to do!). The replacement device works MUCH better -- I'm not experiencing the bugginess or lack of responsiveness I had with the previous device. I'm assuming my original had a defect with the touchscreen. I'm quite happy with the device itself, but I left the rating at 3/5 stars for 2 reasons:
1) My review of the MyTomTom software as of April 2011 and the false advertising (see below) stands.
2) TomTom Support does not seem ready to support the new product or software yet.
For those who care most about the GPS unit itself though, I'm very happy with it -- intuitive, responsive, beautiful interface, and more capable than previous TomToms. Once TomTom fixes their software and support, I'm sure a review could easily give it 5/5 stars.Original Review on 4/14/11:
I was excited to buy this product recently, and receive it on 4/12/11.
However, I have to warn everyone considering any of the newer TomTom VIA line to be cautious.
First, TomTom recently retired their old "TomTom Home" software for new "MyTomTom" software. Many of the features on this Amazon page and on TomTom's page are NOT available because the new software is incapable of supporting those features. This includes map sharing (sharing updates), QuickGPSFix, speed camera updates, voice purchases, backing up your device, etc. I confirmed this via email and via a phone call with TomTom Support. Online forums seem to suggest that it could be months or longer before the software provides this. The phone support rep said that perhaps some of the features would be offered in 30-60 days.
Secondly, the device I received has a sluggish interface most of the time, and the interface will freeze (especially if there's no GPS signal) the rest of the time. The routing functionality is very fast, but it's not useful if you can't actually interact with the device. I received a bit of a runaround from TomTom Support, and even sent them a video I recorded of the problems -- they had no suggestions and suggested I wait for the next application release to fix the bugs.
Finally, the TomTom support site and reps are not ready to support these new devices. Their online support site has articles which fail to even list the new VIA line and their phone support menu doesn't even include it. When using email support, the support rep kept sending me articles on other TomTom models.
Just to summarize, you won't receive the features advertised (this is confirmed), and my experience with the device was poor from the start. I can't express how disappointed I am -- this looked an excellent product, and the interface is beautiful... but unusable.

I needed a hands free system during my extensive daily travel. This one looked easy to use, and it was as long as it worked. I found it to be poorly constructed and the sound quality poor. Cold weather made the situation worse. People I called got frustrated after asking me to repeat my end of the conversation. I was leary about buying this without reviews, but I went against my better judgement and bought it. I'm glad I did though. Though I've still yet to get everything running right under Ubuntu Linux, I'm almost done. When I plugged it in, I instantly got playback of everything I said into the mike, and quality is very good. It shipped days before it was set to as well. I'm planning on using this for animation voice overs and the sort (look at super stickman on google video or youtube in a week or so) and it seems well suited for that purpose. I just can't think about one thing that the product is lacking, well, I suppose the design could be a BIT sturdier, but it seems good to me.

BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300 Phone, Grey (T-Mobile) Review

BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300 Phone, Grey (T-Mobile)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I picked up the Blackberry Curve 3G 9300 at my local RadioShack for FREE and walked away with a nice phone at a very reasonable price. The BB Curve 3G has retained everything from the previous Curve models, but now includes 3G which is a must for any phone these days. To offer EDGE is a complete INSULT! It's like someone saying that they still use dial up to access the internet. It still has the same web browser with the ability to zoom in & out with ease. However, a better browser has sadly been missing in action for all BB models since the rise of the iPhone and Android devices that pop up left and right just about every other day. I can safely say that this browser is also one of the best, but it does lack behind the competition. However, the BB excels when it comes to email. Emails are received instantly on BB devices while Android and Apple require that users to hit refresh after accessing their email icon before receiving emails. Of course, the trade off is that the emails don't arrive in full HTML format the way they would appear on a comp screen - another unfortunate trade off.
The new BB Curve has chrome colored edges to give it a more high-end fashion feel though it still retains its inexpensive plastic feel which can be a plus or a negative for some. The device is also extremely light weight. Everyone must remember that the Curve series is now known as the entry level line to RIMMs smartphone's. This means that users are subjected to a lower screen resolution that doesn't exactly look the most vibrant or sharpest. Colors just don't pop and the screen looks like a cartoon every time I look at it. Despite this fact, it still plays videos very well. You can load any video to the device's memory card and it will play very fluidly. Sadly, this device doesn't come with BB OS 6 installed. It does state clearly that its OS 6 ready as soon as the software is ready to be released (Hopefully Soon). I am sure by now everyone is sick and tired of the OS 5 and ready to move on.
The BB Bold 9700 has been out for about one year and it's practically the same price as this model and most places carry the BB Bold 9700 for free, so I'd recommend going with a higher end model over this. The BB Curve 3G might be aiming for the tweens on a limited budget, but nothing changes the required data plan which ends up making the monthly bill the same despite having a different model device.

Pros:
Nice price for new smartphone users (Free in most places)
Nice fashion colors that only the CURVE series has
3.5 MM headjack
Nice form factor
New OS (Currently OS 5, but for OS 6 to arrive soon)
Excellent call quality
Decent Web browser
Mini SD up to 32GB
Use your songs as ringers
3G Internet Speeds
Wi-Fi
Personal Email (Up to 10 accounts can be added)
IM
BB Meesenger
BB App World
Full HTML Web Browser (Sometimes)
Excellent Multimedia Player (Accepts every format possible)
Crystal clear screen for playing videos
Includes 2 chargers (Wall Charger & USB charger)
Includes ear phones
Cons:
For long time BB users, this device is really just a cosmetic upgrade with a new OS (Flashier Icons)
Micro USB (No more Mini USB)
Camera is only 2.0MP and it should 8.0MP with HD recording capability
No Flash on the camera
Feels like a plastic toy
Poor screen resolution
Non RIMM Consumer Changes Mind!
Good entry level smartphones for new users who want to save without paying the high price. However, Verizon has pricey data and text messenging plans which are a requirement. It's hard to justify the plan prices for such an average entry level device when Sprint and TMobile offer unlimited everything for only thirty dollars a month. With Verizon, thirty bucks only gets you data and nothing else.

T-Mobile Services
High-Speed Data Connectivity via T-Mobile's 3G Network In addition to its quad-band GSM connectivity, this phone is also compatible with T-Mobile's UMTS/HSDPA 3G network, which operates on the 1700/2100 MHz AWS spectrum. This phone is designed to automatically connect to the best available network (3G or GSM/GPRS/EDGE) to provide faster data speeds when accessing the Web.

In areas where the 3G network is not available, you'll continue to receive service on the via T-Mobile's EDGE network (which stands for "Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution"). This high-speed, mobile data and Internet access technology is fast enough to support a wide range of advanced data services (with average data speeds between 75-135Kbps), including full picture and video messaging, high-speed color Internet access, and e-mail on the go.

While this phone is optimized for use with T-Mobile's high-speed 3G network, many of its functions will also work well on the moderate-speed EDGE network. If you plan to access the Internet extensively on your phone, 3G network coverage may serve you best.

Activities that work well on EDGE or 3G networks:

E-mail, instant messaging, and texting
Downloading ringtones, CallerTunes, wallpaper, light data files
Sending photographs via e-mail or picture messaging

Activities that work best on a 3G network:
Viewing content-heavy websites (lots of images or videos playing)
Viewing YouTube and other video files (they will play on EDGE, but require loading time)
Uploading large files (photos, videos, presentations) to sharing websites
Downloading large files from an e-mail or a website

T-Mobile's 3G network is currently available in more than 220 cities nationwide and covers more than 160 million people.

T-Mobile Wi-Fi Calling Service Effortlessly transition between Wi-Fi calling and T-Mobile's wireless network while you talk with T-Mobile's Unlimited HotSpot Calling service or the new Wi-Fi Calling with MobileOffice solution for business customers. Unlimited nationwide Wi-Fi Calling requires either a Wi-Fi Calling mobile plan or Wi-Fi Calling with MobileOffice service, qualifying rate plan, broadband Internet connection and wireless router. Regular plan minutes are used when call does not originate on Wi-Fi network.

T-Mobile's New, Expanding Super-Fast HSPA+ Network
As of June, 2010, T-Mobile has upgraded its traditional 3G network to HSPA+ in 25 major metropolitan areas across the U.S., and it plans to continue rolling out this network upgrade to over 100 metropolitan cities and up to 185 million people by the end of 2010. HSPA+ provides our fastest data speeds, up to 3 times faster than AT&T and Verizon's standard 3G networks, while allowing simultaneous voice and data capabilities for the ultimate wireless voice and data experience.

HSPA+ enabled areas will enjoy 4G-like speeds, with a theoretical capability of up to 21 Mbps peak download speeds (and typical download speeds averaging between 5 and 8 Mbps).

While this 3G-enabled mobile phone doesn't offer HSPA+ compatibility, it can benefit from enhanced speeds when connecting to the HSPA+ network today.
